What is the difference between word count and character count?

Word count follows the selected language’s word boundaries; character count measures visible Unicode characters. “Hello world” has 2 words and 11 characters including the space, or 10 without it.

How are words counted in CJK languages?

Intl.Segmenter finds word boundaries for the selected language, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Korean is counted as segmented words, not syllables. Browsers without Intl.Segmenter use a Unicode word-pattern fallback, so results can differ.

Is my text stored or sent to a server?

No. All processing happens entirely in your browser. Your text is never transmitted or stored on any server.

What counts as a paragraph?

A paragraph is defined as a block of text separated by one or more blank lines. A single line of text with no blank line break counts as one paragraph.

How are reading and speaking times estimated?

Reading and speaking estimates use 238 and 150 words per minute, respectively, for segmented words, including Korean. Han ideographs, hiragana, and katakana are counted separately, at 500 characters per minute for reading and 300 for speaking. Mixed text adds both contributions. These are estimates; actual times vary by reader and text.

How are emoji and combining accents counted?

With Intl.Segmenter, “café 👩🏽‍💻” has 1 word and 6 visible characters including the space, or 5 without it. The é counts as one character whether composed or written as e plus a combining accent; the emoji is also one character. Without Intl.Segmenter, character counting falls back to Unicode code points, so counts can differ.
